Over the past few years, some changes have occurred in our industry regarding refrigerant, also known as coolant or Freon.  If you have an older A/C unit (2009 or older) you most likely have R22 coolant.  The newer refrigerant is called 410A.

R22 is thought to be an ozone depleting substance and is being phased out under the Montreal Protocol. The complete phase out date is 2020.  There has been a gradual decrease in production of R22 starting in 2013 with a total phase-out in 2020.  We can continue to utilize any existing R22 that is recycled or was produced prior to 2020.

How does this affect you, the consumer?  The most evident change you will notice is a huge spike in the cost of R22.  Most companies are selling R22 from between $100 to $150 per pound.  The average system takes around 8lbs with some systems taking as much as 15lbs.  The cost of repairing an R22 unit can quickly add up.  If your system is leaking R22 adding refrigerant each year can quickly add up. Not to mention, that as the system gets low on coolant it runs longer to get the house cool.  This, of course, adds to your energy cost.

We have many customers that are caught off guard by the cost of repairs.  If you have an R22 system and it is not leaking coolant and is cooling fine, there is no reason to panic.  But you should be aware that the cost of repairs that require coolant may make repair costs prohibitive.

Maintaining your current R22 system to prevent failure is more important than ever.  Many of the leaks we see are caused by vibration, which is when two components rub together.  A simple visual inspection of the system, separating copper lines, and fixing issues that cause excessive vibration may make the difference between a simple service charge and a very expensive repair.

Carbon Monoxide- “The Silent Killer”

Many of our customers are not aware that we sell and install carbon monoxide detectors as one of the many services we offer.

Every year, 20,000 to 30,000 people in the United States are sickened by accidental carbon monoxide poisoning and approximately 500 people die, many in their own home. Carbon monoxide is colorless, odorless, and tasteless. It cannot be detected by humans without the help of a detector.

A new study, released today in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), has found that carbon monoxide easily passes through gypsum wallboards (also called drywall), the material used to finish walls and ceilings in most residential homes. The porous material does nothing to stop the gas from seeping through.

If you have any gas appliances and do not have carbon monoxide detectors in your home please call Reliance today to schedule an appointment or ask one of our friendly technicians about them when they’re out to perform your Fall check-up.  We want to help keep you and your family safe in your home!
